My Own Cartel

I met up with Tiki Terry, Diver Dan, and Robin at Dockside in Boot Key Harbor. I had anchored in the center of the harbor, just off the main channel. Dan and Robin were anchored in Sister Creek. I made the introductions over cold beers. We used the meeting as a team building session. No specifics of what we were about to do were mentioned. We’d do that in private.

Terry was making arrangements for my crew to store their boats near Tavernier. I had Bald Mark’s slip waiting for me. We debated what type of fast boat to buy. I did not want a loud Cigarette or Donzi. I pushed the argument that an offshore center console with triple outboards would be less conspicuous and quieter than the typical go-fast beast. I convinced the others. Terry set out to do a little research on various makes. We wanted it fast, just as fast as Mark’s old boats.

Bald Mark was set to appear in court, and eventually the custody of Florida’s correctional system in two days. I wanted to see him before he left. I was about to assume half of his illegal operation. In return, I’ve have a place to lie low, out of the public eye. I’d also make a crap load of cash.

I pulled into his slip late the next day. He was at his usual table in the tiki bar.

“Nothing like waiting for the last minute,” he said in greeting.

“I’ve rested and recreated,” I said. “Now I’m ready to rock.”

“Your crew is ready too?” he asked.

“My guys are in Marathon,” I answered. “Terry is getting them something closer.”

“Terry is a sharp guy,” he said. “He and I have come to an understanding. Do what he says, he’ll be getting directions from me. Now you and I need to come to a similar understanding.”

“You trust me,” I began. “But if I screw up, or cross you in any way, I’m a goner.”

“That’s pretty much the gist of it,” he said. “I’m putting the past behind us. I’ve learned that you get shit done. I’ve observed some sort of code you follow. You saved that Cuban girl. You avenged that chick that got shot in Miami. I think you’re straight up. Don’t disappoint me.”

“I’ve got no reason to,” I said. “I’m here to make money for me and my friends. I don’t care about the rest of it.”

“Terry will take care of the rest of it,” he said.

“Enjoy your vacation,” I offered.

“I’ll be back in a year, or less,” he said. “Keep the roof on for me.”

He got up and walked out. Before leaving, he used his black eyes to look deep into my soul. It gave me a chill. I was on his good side now. I didn’t ever want to be on his bad side. I walked back to my boat, pondering the latest turn my life had taken.

Over the next few days, our little team went over charts to determine likely locations offshore to pick up our loads.
